CONGRATULATIONS to Ted Sitting Crow Garner, for winning in Jeopardy on Tuesday! I don't know Wednesday's result..
This incidentally resulted in a phenomenal increase in "Views"/ Google Search on my Blogpost on him. So I decided to repost it..

Original Post below..
Continuing with my series on Contemporary Sculptors of Chicago..
Here's Ted Sitting Crow Garner..

Yesterday, [Sep 7, 2010] I met Ted Sitting Crow Garner, at his Sedgwick Studio in the Old Town neighborhood. In fact five sculptors share the studio, others being John Adduci, Michael Young, S. Thomas Scarff and Jerry Peart..
I have met him earlier at the Art Chicago, 2010..
And it was great to meet a sculptor of Native American heritage..His great-great-grandfather Sitting Crow was a Blackfoot Sioux chief and Garner is a registered member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.

Ted Sitting Crow Garner earned his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. His sculpture has been exhibited throughout the United States and he has travelled the world assisting major artists with the installation of monumental sculpture. His large scale outdoor sculpture often incorporates the sinuous line of shaped steel tubing ..

Ten Oldest Sculptures of Chicago

Above Image: - Drexel Fountain - by Henry Manger..

One fine day, I got curious about the early sculptures of Chicago, which were installed before 1900, and can still be found at public places.. This got me into perparing this list of the Ten Oldest sculptures of Chicago.. All these are between the period 1864-1890.. Soon I will list sculptures between 1890-1900..

Note the complete absence of abstract sculptures.. Correct me if I'm wrong, till the 1940's, I don't think there's any abstract sculpture in Chicago. The first abstract sculpture, at a public place in Chicago, was "Red Petals" [1942] by Alexander Calder, in the lobby of Arts Club of Chicago.. We all know that after the installation of "Untitled" [popularly known as Picasso] by Pablo Picasso in the Daley Plaza, in 1967, there was a profusion of abstract sculptures in Chicago.. But which are the earliest abstract sculptures in Chicago? Now this is another topic I would love to work on..
However, today, I begin with the ten earliest sculptures in Chicago..

Rosehill Cemetery [Volunteer Firefighters Monument - by Leonard W. Volk]

Volunteer Firefighters Monument - by Leonard W. Volk

Volunteer Firefighters Monument - by Leonard W. Volk

Erected in 1864 by the Firemens Benevolent Association

Rededicated October 7, 1979, Chicago Firefighters' Union

Location: Rosehill Cemetery

5800 North Ravenswood Avenue, Chicago, IL 60660.

A vigilant fireman stands atop a tall column, with a megaphone in his left hand. The base of the column is wrapped with coiled fire hose. The marble monument commemorates the 15 members of Chicago's volunteers fire brigate who are buried on the plot.. The granite marker at the base contains the names of all firefighters killed in the line of duty. Four old-style hydrants make up the corners of this memorial.

The funeral scene in the movie Backdraft. was filmed using a replica of this monument.

This Blog dedicated to the Sculpture Community of Chicago.

About three-four years back, sometime in 2007, I started to photograph and document the Public Art in Chicago. I had no idea that soon it would become my passion and now I've spent hours and hours and hours on it!
